With the newest of video gaming consoles came a new lingo that still confounds parents. Once a parent understands the different gaming platforms then comes the task of comprehending the variety of genres that video games fall into. Here is a brief glossary of video gaming genre acronyms to help familiarize parents with the terminology their kids are using.

RPG – This stands for Role Playing Games, where players assume the identity of a fictional character regardless of where the action takes place. Character options are endless depending on the game.  RPG most likely require a solid internet connection to participate.

VSG – Commonly known as Vehicle Simulation, this genre includes all vehicle types from driving tanks, sports cars and jeeps to flying military and commercial aircraft. The top three consoles offer VSG’s that provide a life-like experience to the player, with graphics that are remarkable. Some of the flight simulators are equivalent or even better than the ones used to train commercial and military pilots. For many VSG there are pedals, steering wheels and joysticks to enhance simulation.

Construction and Management System games are known as CMS. These games allow gamers to customize diverse civilizations. Almost all of these focus on building the economic base to a level of prosperity. These are about the development of a certain location whether a city or country not war. Developing business and communication skills is the focus of this game. Using building and management skills properly, a player should be able to create and sustain a plausible lifestyle in the game.

RTS or TBS – Both of these are used for strategy video games, one for Real Time and the other for Turn Based. Turn Based Systems analyze operations before participating in activities, while Real Time utilize “spur of the moment” actions. All RTS require computer or internet based platforms. TBS consist of more games including board games. Real Time games have continuously changing levels.  It has been theorized that RTS games encourage thinking and problem solving skills.

Most video game categories do not have acronyms. Video game genres are as easy to understand as movie genres.
